Croatia isn’t cheap. But I didn’t make it cheaper for myself. I could of walked more, eaten at corner stores only, or found cheaper local digs. But I was tired. And you’ll see by the quick pace I was maintaining, that exhaustion was imminent. Thus, I took the easier way out and headed to a restaurant. Although I did smarten up in Dubrovnik when I had a kitchen to cook in. Otherwise, Croatia could easily do serious damage to your wallet.

I had no plans for Dubrovnik. I just wanted to BE in the city. There was no specific activities I wanted to do, foods I needed to eat, or sights I needed the see. It was the city itself; Dubrovnik; that I wanted to be apart of. To wander around aimlessly, to watch the boats pulling into the harbour, and take in the history of the city. And that is EXACTLY what I did.

As I past the “Welcome to Split” sign, I started to worry – all the buildings were tall, concrete, and white; In a world – Ugly. Where was the Split that the books described? Where was the Split that the other folks I’d met were beaming with excitement over? I saw no ruins, I saw no charm. I only saw the unadorned monochrome buildings within sight. Where were the Orange roofs and the ancient ruins? But I needn’t worry – I only had to wait to exit the suburbs and be welcomed into the old town – into the Split I was anticipating.

I think I finally set my expectations too high. I wanted to be awe-struck. All the images I had seen before made it look like a magical waterfall kingdom. Yes, Plitvice National Park was beautiful, that is indisputable, with its turquoise lakes and gushing waterfalls – but I was just expecting something more. I was expecting a wonderland. Plitvice National Park you are nice but you are not the natural wonderland that my mind conjured you up to be. It’s not you – it’s me.
