When Aussi Dreams Come True: Kangaroos & Koalas
Most people have similar notions about what they want to do in Australia. Visit Sydney Harbour, Dive the Great Barrier Reef, and Roadtrip through the Outback. My expectations were a little less city oriented and a little fuzzier – I wanted to Cuddle a Koala and Hug a Kangaroo. And guess what? All my Aussi dreams came true at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
Each conversation with a recently acquainted Aussi always found its way to the same question; What do you want to do in Australia? And My response was always the same: Cuddle a Koala and Hug a Kangaroo. Most often my response was met with laughter or warnings of danger. Kangaroos will kick you. Koalas will claw you. Don’t go near them.
Despite their warnings, and their clearly greater local knowledge, I was determined to make it happen, if not in the wild, than elsewhere. I persevered and found the place that I could make my Australia dreams come true: The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
I hadn’t done a lot of outdoor exploring in Australia. I am actually terrified of all the poisonous things lurking around waiting to kill me. I’m not scared of bears, snakes, or N.American Spiders, but I will openly admit to being terrified of all Aussi creepy crawlies! So the Sanctuary was perfect – I could experience the animal cuddling without the potential death threat.
And cuddle I did. I think it is best that I went alone as I’m not sure many other people could take the 6 hours of ohh-ing and aw-ing over the Kangaroos and Koalas. Or maybe they could have but I wanted to be alone with their adorableness – Giggling like the little girl I am. I just LOVE these animals.
