Photo of the Week: The Rainbow Rocks of Chaxa Lagoon

Chaxa Lagoon is located in Los Flamencos National Reserve in Northern Chile – precisely in the Region of San Pedro de Atacama. The Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile and the high concentrations of salt and lack of rain in the area result in the rough and rigid look of the surface. But underneath is where the beauty lies In the chaxa Lagoon the layers of chloride are up to 70 cm high, the transition layers with polygonal shapes and sulfate layers and creates the beautiful rainbow colours you see on this piece of salt rock. Beautiful.

    • It was just so shocking to see whiteness surrounding me and then have the guide pick up the rock and be presented with these vibrant colours! Such a pleasant surprise!

  2. For a moment I thought it was another ice cream photo :) I want to see this in person!
