Pura Luhur Ulu Watu – Bali, Indonesia

Pura Luhur Ulu Watu – Bali, Indonesia

Pura Luhur Ulu Watu is an incredible temple complex in the Kuta South district of Bali which was built in the 11th century.  “Luhur” means “something of divine origin” while “Ulu” which means “land’s end” and “Watu” means “rock” in the Balinese language.

The temple is located 1.25 hours South of Kuta. The inner sanctum of Pura Luhur Ulu Watu is perched on the edge of a steep cliff that towers above the surf breaks of southern Bali.

The temples location on the south western most precinct of the island guards the Balinese from the evil spirits of the ocean.

The temple complex has multiple signs to warn you about the aggressiveness of the monkeys. And they were indeed evil monkeys. The monkeys jumped on my couchsurfing host, Titik’s, head and stole her sunglasses. I retaliated with a sharp whack from my walking stick but they growled and started to chase me. I proceeded to ran squealing like a pig in the opposite direction. I was terrified – evil monkeys.
