The East doors of the San Giovanni Baptistery are also known as The Gates of Paradise. The “Gates of Paradise” where named by Michelangelo who exclaimed: “they are so beautiful that they would be perfect for the gates of paradise“. The doors were commissioned to Lorenzo Ghiberti (1403-1424), an Italian artist, known for his sculptures and metalwork. The door depicts scenes from the Old Testament.
